Tivo DVR

I have a 40-DIRECTV DVR TiVo. Is it worth to update to get more hours, and because it is 2 years old?

I have two of these and live TV sent me two DIRECTV DVR + 's which I hate. I put them in rooms where my children watch and not me. I am worried that my TiVo's going to die soon, it is worth to upgrade them with new hard drives? Where would I find such things, and how difficult is it to do?

I will keep with the device you have now. Have a Tivo based receiver is so much better than the DirecTV units are using these days. Your easiest solution is to buy a pre-configured bigger hard drive through weakness link below. It is very easy to replace the drive. The next option is to buy and hack the device with your own drive. In this process, you can create a bootable CD, use the image for the new hard drive and replace the hard drive in the device. The file you will be called 'Instantcake' and can be found via the link below. You can also use instantcake in conjunction with the "zipper" which will install more enhanced features on your device. For example, you can network a "zipper" Dtivo device with your PC, you will not have a telephone connected, you can view pictures and video from your PC to your TV, you can also create more space has been seen with other fasteners units. For me the best feature is that you can transfer shows a zipper TiVo to your PC and record it to DVD. I think that using the Instant cake can be easier than doing the zipper. So if the instructions for the zipper is out of your league, try Simply create instant cake. Also the TivoCommunity forums link below-are your best resource for upgrade assistance. They have a Tivo Underground line for upgrade assistance and support. Concluding remark. The general consensus on DirecTV thread on the Community forums is that the disk is the first thing to go. So with luck, if you switch off the hard drive you should fixed a couple of years.
